This comprehensive guide is dedicated to helping you discover the most delightful gluten-free dining experiences on the vibrant Kona side of the Big Island. Prepare to indulge in an array of safe and scrumptious options that will satisfy every palate.

Beyond the Beaches: Unearthing Gluten-Free Culinary Treasures on the Big Island
The Big Island of Hawaii is renowned worldwide for its breathtaking volcanic landscapes, pristine beaches, and endless outdoor adventures, from exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to snorkeling in crystal-clear waters. While its natural wonders often take center stage, the island’s culinary scene, particularly for those with dietary needs like gluten intolerance, has steadily grown more sophisticated. We recently returned from an unforgettable multi-week journey across this magnificent island, and like many avid travelers (who also happen to be dedicated “gastrotourists”), a significant part of my planning involved uncovering delicious and safe gluten-free options. While some might suggest that gluten-free pickings are slim compared to islands like Maui or Oahu, I’m thrilled to report that with a little research and local insight, the Big Island offers an impressive selection of accommodating eateries.

As a passionate advocate for travel that revolves around exceptional food, I made it my personal mission to unearth these culinary gems. And what a mission it was! I’m delighted to share that I discovered numerous fantastic restaurants and casual spots that not only cater to gluten-free diners but also offer incredible flavors that everyone in your travel party will appreciate. This guide focuses specifically on the Kona side, encompassing popular areas like Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa, and Waimea, where we spent the majority of our trip.
A Crucial Note for Celiac Diners: It’s imperative to exercise caution if you have Celiac Disease. While many of the restaurants listed below provide extensive gluten-free menus and their staff are generally well-informed and accommodating, they are not 100% gluten-free establishments. This means there is always a potential risk of cross-contamination in shared kitchens. Always communicate your dietary needs clearly and explicitly state the severity of your allergy to your server. Don’t hesitate to ask about preparation methods, dedicated fryers, and separate cooking surfaces to ensure your safety and peace of mind.
Exploring the Kona Side: Premier Gluten-Free Restaurants and Eateries
Our Big Island adventure began with a few serene days near Waikoloa Beach, followed by a blissful stay in a rental home close to Hapuna Beach. Consequently, our culinary explorations were concentrated on the Kona side, primarily within the charming towns of Kailua-Kona, the picturesque Waimea, and the resort-filled Waikoloa. Traveling with friends who do not have dietary restrictions meant that finding restaurants universally appealing was key. The establishments featured here successfully passed the “mixed crowd” test, proving to be excellent choices for everyone, not just those seeking gluten-free options.
Pro Tip for Peak Season Travelers: The Hawaiian Islands, particularly the Big Island, have seen a significant surge in tourism in recent years. To avoid disappointment and lengthy waits, especially at popular dining spots, we highly recommend making reservations several weeks in advance. Securing your spot ensures you can savor your meals without stress, enjoying the paradise setting rather than settling for an overpriced, subpar alternative.
Effortless & Delicious: Casual Gluten-Free Dining Options
For those days when you crave a relaxed atmosphere, speedy service, and delectable gluten-free fare without the fuss of a formal sit-down meal, these fast-casual spots are perfect for ordering at the counter and enjoying a flavorful bite.
Racha Thai and Racha Thai 2
A true blessing for gluten-free diners, Racha Thai boasts two locations and is a fantastic 100% gluten-free Thai eatery. We frequented both spots multiple times during our stay, appreciating the peace of mind that comes with a fully dedicated gluten-free kitchen. The original Racha Thai is nestled within a modest food court in Waikoloa Village, offering a quaint, local charm. Its sister restaurant, Racha Thai 2, can be found in a bustling food court in Waimea. While perhaps not the most intensely authentic Thai cuisine you’ll ever encounter, the food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and, most importantly, completely safe for those avoiding gluten. Our personal favorites included the succulent chicken satay skewers, refreshing avocado rolls, and the vibrant green papaya salad. It’s the ideal spot for a quick, worry-free lunch that doesn’t compromise on taste.

Island Ono Loa Grill
If your travels take you to Kailua-Kona and a craving for a classic, no-frills burger and fries strikes, Island Ono Loa Grill is your destination. This welcoming establishment is celebrated for its commitment to gluten-free options, proudly offering gluten-free buns and French fries prepared in a dedicated fryer—a significant relief for many diners. I thoroughly enjoyed my selection: a delicious Macnut Pesto Goat Cheese Burger, which I upgraded to 100% grass-fed beef for an extra layer of flavor and quality. Be prepared for a potential wait, as every order is cooked fresh and to perfection. The good news? The grill’s convenient location allows for a leisurely stroll along the beautiful Kailua-Kona waterfront while you anticipate your meal, turning wait time into scenic enjoyment.

Village Burger Kamuela
Nestled in the charming upcountry town of Waimea, Village Burger Kamuela quickly became a personal favorite among the burger joints we explored on the Big Island. What sets this place apart is its dedication to quality ingredients: all the meat is pasture-raised right here in Hawaii, ensuring a fresh and flavorful patty. They elevate the classic burger with an imaginative array of unique and delicious toppings, making each bite an adventure. A huge bonus for gluten-free guests is the availability of excellent gluten-free buns and, crucially, fries cooked in a dedicated fryer, eliminating cross-contamination concerns. Do keep in mind one important detail: Village Burger is a cash-only establishment, so a quick stop at an ATM before your visit is highly recommended to avoid any last-minute surprises.

Memorable Dining Experiences: Sit-Down Restaurants with Gluten-Free Menus
For evenings that call for a more relaxed pace, a celebratory meal, or simply a desire to savor the island’s flavors in a comfortable setting, these sit-down restaurants offer a range of experiences, from family-friendly mid-priced options to exquisite special occasion destinations, all with commendable gluten-free accommodations.
Lava Lava Beach Club
Seeking an idyllic beachfront dining experience complete with the soothing sound of waves and live Hawaiian music? Look no further than Lava Lava Beach Club in Waikoloa. This popular spot offers a uniquely relaxed atmosphere where you can dig your toes in the sand while enjoying your meal. While the gluten-free menu might not be extensive, they are adept at making modifications. A popular choice, and one I opted for, is a bun-less burger. However, note that their fries are not prepared in a dedicated gluten-free fryer, so it’s best to skip them if you’re sensitive. Prepare for a potentially long wait for a table, especially if you’re not staying on-property (as they don’t take reservations for non-guests). However, the waiting area is part of the charm, featuring an inviting outdoor space where you can enjoy drinks from a food truck and even play bocce ball on the lawn, transforming waiting into a fun, pre-dinner activity.

Foster’s Kitchen
With convenient locations in both Kailua-Kona and Waikoloa, Foster’s Kitchen stands out as an excellent choice for groups with diverse palates, including those requiring gluten-free options. This restaurant is celebrated for its extensive and clearly marked gluten-free menu, making ordering a breeze. A major highlight is their dedicated gluten-free fryer, which means favorites like gluten-free fish and chips are safely on the menu! Foster’s Kitchen excels at offering familiar, hearty comfort food with a Hawaiian twist, from robust salads and flavorful sandwiches (with GF bread options) to perfectly cooked fish, BBQ, and even gluten-free pizza. It’s a reliable spot where everyone, from picky eaters to adventurous foodies, can find something delicious to enjoy in a comfortable, welcoming environment.

The Fish and The Hog
For an intriguing fusion of authentic Texas-inspired BBQ and fresh, local Hawaiian cuisine, The Fish and The Hog in Waimea is an absolute must-visit. This incredibly popular spot, unfortunately, does not take reservations, so arriving early is crucial to minimize your wait time, especially during peak dining hours. Once seated, you’ll be treated to a menu that expertly blends smoky, tender meats with vibrant island flavors. For gluten-free diners, the options are plentiful and satisfying. Our top recommendations include the melt-in-your-mouth pulled pork, the rich and smoky brisket, and their refreshingly spicy poke bowl. A significant bonus here is their proactive approach to allergies: simply inform your server of any dietary restrictions, and you’ll receive a special menu clearly outlining common allergens, ensuring a safe and enjoyable meal.

Bonus for Allergy Sufferers: Upon mentioning any allergies, the staff will provide a detailed menu specifically designed to highlight common allergens, making your ordering process much more transparent and secure.

FORC
A more recent but quickly acclaimed addition to Waimea’s dining scene, FORC (Farmer, Ocean, Rancher, Cook) came highly recommended by a fellow food enthusiast I met on the Big Island, who praised its abundance of gluten-free, grass-fed, and even paleo-friendly options. This restaurant truly lives up to its name, crafting a modern interpretation of Hawaiian classics using the freshest local ingredients sourced directly from the island’s farms, ranches, and surrounding ocean. The menu is a testament to sustainable and thoughtful cooking. While the allure of their grass-fed steak was strong, I ultimately chose the traditional Hawaiian Meal, an authentic and incredibly satisfying plate. It featured tender, slow-cooked pork, vibrant roasted purple sweet potato, luau leaf, lomi salmon, poi, fresh poke, and ho’io (fiddlehead ferns). Every component showcased the depth of local flavors and culinary heritage in a sophisticated, gluten-free presentation.

Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill
Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill, a popular and airy establishment located in Kailua-Kona, provided one of our most delightful early dining experiences on the trip. Had we been staying closer than a 45-minute drive, we undoubtedly would have returned multiple times. While their menu doesn’t explicitly label gluten-free items, the waitstaff are remarkably knowledgeable and attentive, expertly guiding diners through the many dishes that can be safely prepared without gluten. This level of informed service made ordering incredibly easy and reassuring. On my visit, I opted for the Mochiko Crusted Butterfish, a dish that often contains gluten but was skillfully adapted. My choice proved to be an excellent one, offering a perfectly cooked, flaky fish with a delightful crust, showcasing their ability to deliver exceptional gluten-free modifications without sacrificing flavor or quality.

Pueo’s Osteria
For those craving exquisite Italian cuisine on the Big Island, Pueo’s Osteria in Waikoloa is a standout destination, and for good reason. This charming restaurant was, without a doubt, my son Ollie’s absolute favorite! As a passionate noodle enthusiast, he devoured their bolognese, served over perfectly cooked gluten-free pasta, with impressive speed on both of our visits. Beyond the pasta, Pueo’s Osteria offers an extensive selection of gluten-free options across its menu. In fact, most breaded items can be skillfully adapted to be gluten-free, opening up a world of possibilities. During one visit, I indulged in a beautifully prepared gluten-free Chicken Milanese, a dish often off-limits for GF diners, but executed flawlessly here. On our subsequent visit, I savored a delicious salmon and risotto special, highlighting their diverse culinary capabilities. The portions are generous, the flavors are rich and authentic, and the service is exceptionally warm and friendly, making for a truly memorable dining experience. Given its popularity, definitely call ahead to secure a reservation. And don’t forget to check out the intriguing celebrity wall near the hostess stand to see which famous faces have enjoyed a meal here!

Merriman’s
Merriman’s in Waimea truly epitomizes the “splurge dinner” experience on the Big Island, delivering an exceptional culinary journey that is absolutely worth every penny and every mile driven. Having previously enjoyed the Merriman’s experience on Maui, visiting the original Waimea location was a special treat. While it maintains the high standards of exquisite food and impeccable service characteristic of the Merriman’s brand, the Waimea outpost offers a slightly more casual, family-friendly vibe than its Maui counterpart, making it a wonderful choice for a celebratory yet comfortable evening. The menu is a celebration of farm-to-table excellence, featuring fresh, local ingredients transformed into culinary masterpieces. Crucially for gluten-free diners, Merriman’s offers an abundance of clearly marked gluten-free options, ensuring you feel completely catered to and unconstrained in your choices. During my visit, I delighted in the delicate crudo of the day, showcasing the freshest catch, followed by an incredible lamb special. This exquisite dish featured perfectly cooked lamb chops alongside tender braised lamb and vibrant local vegetables, a true testament to their culinary artistry. If you’re pondering whether Merriman’s is worth the drive from any corner of the island, the answer is an resounding YES. It’s an unforgettable dining experience that perfectly blends sophisticated cuisine with the relaxed aloha spirit.

Sweet Endings: Gluten-Free Desserts and Treats on the Kona Side
No Hawaiian vacation is complete without indulging in some delightful sweets and treats! For those with a sweet tooth and gluten-free dietary needs, the Kona side offers some fantastic options for refreshing shave ice, creamy gelato, and delectable dairy-free ice cream. These were some of our absolute favorite discoveries!
Scandinavian Shave Ice
A quintessential Hawaiian experience, shave ice is a must-try. We nearly missed out on this iconic treat when several local spots near our rental were unexpectedly closed. Determined not to leave the Big Island without it, we embarked on a special drive all the way to Kailua-Kona to visit Scandinavian Shave Ice. While I can’t definitively declare it the “best” shave ice on Hawaii, as it was our sole experience this trip, the vibrant flavors and generous portions certainly brought huge smiles to my kids’ faces. The finely shaved ice, doused in an array of colorful, fruity syrups, provided the perfect cool-down on a warm Hawaiian afternoon, proving to be a highly satisfying and memorable treat for the whole family.

Gypsea Gelato
For those times when a rich, creamy indulgence is called for, Gypsea Gelato in Kailua-Kona is a destination not to be missed. While I typically limit my dairy intake, some treats are simply worth the exception – and their lilikoi (passion fruit) gelato falls squarely into that category. The vibrant, tangy-sweet flavor of fresh lilikoi is perfectly captured in every spoonful of their exquisitely smooth gelato. Even with the often-long line stretching out the door, the wait is absolutely justified for this exceptional taste of Hawaii. It’s a truly blissful experience, making it a highlight for any dessert lover.

Sweet Journey’s Soft Serve
Dairy-free diners, rejoice! Sweet Journey’s Soft Serve in Kailua-Kona has you wonderfully covered with their innovative and utterly delicious macadamia milk-based soft serve. This is a game-changer for anyone avoiding dairy, offering a creamy, satisfying texture and subtle flavor profile unique to macadamia nuts. Topped with your choice of delectable sauces and crunchy additions like coconut flakes, it transforms into a gourmet dairy-free dessert that’s both indulgent and refreshing. It’s a testament to the Big Island’s growing capacity to cater to diverse dietary preferences without compromising on taste or quality.

Hawaiian Licks
Prepare your taste buds for what might just be the finest dairy-free ice cream on the planet: Hawaiian Licks. Their lilikoi flavor vegan ice cream, crafted from rich coconut milk, strikes the perfect balance of sweetness and a delightful tangy zest. This exquisite treat quickly became a staple in our vacation rental’s freezer, often requiring a carton (or two!) to be restocked. While Hawaiian Licks operates a scoop shop in Hilo (on the east side of the island), which we regrettably didn’t get a chance to visit, their delectable cartons are readily available on the Kona side. You can typically find a well-stocked selection of Hawaiian Licks, including the coveted lilikoi flavor, at the local KTA Superstore in Waikoloa. It’s an absolute must-try for any dairy-free or vegan ice cream aficionado visiting the Big Island.

And there you have it – a comprehensive guide to navigating the delicious and increasingly gluten-free-friendly culinary landscape of the Big Island’s Kona side! From casual burger joints with dedicated fryers to upscale dining experiences with accommodating menus, and a plethora of sweet treats to cool you down, the Big Island offers a remarkable array of options for every gluten-free traveler. Mahalo for joining me on this gastronomic journey across one of Hawaii’s most magnificent islands. I sincerely hope these recommendations enhance your visit and allow you to savor every moment, worry-free.
